How to tell your face shape

Pull your hair back and look straight into a mirror. Notice four things: the width of your forehead, the distance between your cheekbones, your jawline, and the length from hairline to chin. Where your face is widest, and how its length compares to its width, mostly decide your shape.

  1. Forehead: just above the brows, temple to temple.
  2. Cheekbones: below the outer corners of the eyes, between the two highest points.
  3. Jawline: from below the ear to the tip of the chin on one side, times two.
  4. Length: from the middle of the hairline to the tip of the chin.

If you have a tape measure, take these four; if not, comparing them in the mirror is enough. The test turns that comparison into 5 questions.

The 6 face shapes

Oval

Balanced proportions; cheekbones slightly wider, a gently curved jaw.

Round

Length and width are close; soft lines.

Square

Wide forehead and jaw; an angular jawline.

Heart

Wide forehead, tapering to a narrow chin.

Long

Clearly longer than wide; straighter sides.

Diamond

Wide cheekbones; narrow forehead and chin.

Questions

Can I find my face shape without a photo?

Yes. Comparing a few proportions in the mirror is usually enough, and this test turns that comparison into 5 questions. For a more consistent measurement, use an app that measures from a selfie.

How does face shape affect makeup?

It decides where blush, contour and highlighter go. The point isn't to force your face into a template — it's to bring out your own proportions.

I'm between two shapes. Which one is right?

Most faces sit between two shapes. The test shows your closest shape and, if there is one, the next closest — try the tips from both.

What's the difference between a heart and a diamond face?

A heart face is widest at the forehead and tapers toward the chin. A diamond face is widest at the cheekbones, with both the forehead and the chin narrower.

Are my answers saved anywhere?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser; your answers are never sent to a server or stored.
