What is an undertone?

Your skin tone can be fair, medium or deep; your undertone is the color cast beneath it. There are four: warm (golden-yellow), cool (pink-bluish), neutral (a balance of both) and olive (greenish-golden). Your skin tone can lighten or deepen with the seasons; your undertone usually stays the same.

Quick checks at home

  1. In daylight, look at the veins on your inner wrist: greenish points to warm, blue-purple to cool.
  2. Hold gold, then silver jewelry next to your face — which one brightens your skin?
  3. Compare a pure white fabric with a cream one under your chin.
  4. Think about how foundation looks on you: always too pink, or always too yellow?

A single sign can mislead, which is why the test weighs several together.

Questions

Is undertone the same as skin tone?

No. Skin tone is how light or deep your skin is; undertone is the color cast beneath it. Two people with the same depth can have different undertones.

How do I know if I have an olive undertone?

If most foundations look either too pink or too yellow on you, and your skin looks slightly greenish-grey in some light, your undertone may be olive.

Is the vein test enough on its own?

No — light and screens can mislead. That's why the test weighs veins, jewelry, sun and foundation signs together.

How does my undertone affect foundation?

Foundation codes like W, C, N or olive point to the undertone. Once you find the range that matches yours, choosing the depth gets easier.

Are my answers saved?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser; your answers are never sent to a server or stored.
