Hooded eyes makeup

With hooded eyes, skin from the brow bone covers most of the lid when your eye is open — so shadow applied with your eye closed disappears. The fix: work on what shows when your eye is open.

On hooded eyes the transition shade goes above the natural crease, where it shows with your eyes open.

What you'll need

Step by step

  1. Start with primer

Close your eye gently and apply primer thinly from the lash line to the brow bone. On hooded lids the skin touches the lid, so shadow fades fast without it.

  2. Build a new crease with your eye open

Open your eye and look straight ahead. Sweep the matte transition shade a little above your natural crease — onto the area under the brow bone that's visible with your eye open. It looks high with your eye closed, but it's exactly where it needs to be when you open it.

Tip: This is the most important step for hooded eyes: open your eye often and check as you go.

  3. Light up the lid

Close your eye gently and press the light shimmer onto the center of the lid. Only a little of the lid shows when your eye is open, and shimmer brings that part forward.

  4. Lift the outer corner

Place the deep shade on the outer corner and blend it upward, toward the brow tail. Blending it down or straight out makes the eye look droopy.

  5. Thin, lifted liner

Keep your eye open. Draw a thin line at the lash base and draw the wing with your eye open; when the lid folds, the middle of the wing may hide while the tips stay — that's called a bat wing, and it's correct.

Tip: Thick liner covers the visible part of the lid completely; keep it thin.

  6. Lift the lashes

With your eye open, place the curler at the lash base and press for a few seconds. Then apply waterproof mascara from root to tip; lifted lashes open up the visible lid.

Common mistakes

FAQ

What eyeliner suits hooded eyes?

A thin line close to the lash base that lifts at the outer corner. Always draw the wing with your eye open.

Where does eyeshadow go on hooded eyes?

The transition shade a little above your natural crease, where it shows with your eye open; light shimmer on the center of the lid; the deep shade on the outer corner, blended upward.

Why does my makeup transfer on hooded lids?

Because the skin touches the lid. Use a long-wear primer, matte shadows and waterproof liner.
