Step-by-step guide · Face
Where to put highlighter
Highlighter goes on the high points where light naturally hits your face: in the right places it makes you look fresh and rested, in the wrong ones it shows pores and oil.
What you'll need
- Cream, liquid or powder highlighter
- A small fan or round brush; your fingers for cream
Step by step
Use the right order
Cream and liquid highlighter go over foundation, before powder. Powder highlighter goes after powder — on damp skin it turns patchy.
Top of the cheekbones
Apply a thin line along the highest point of the cheekbone, from the outer edge of your pupil toward the temple, curling the end up toward your brow tail in a C shape.
Bridge of the nose and cupid's bow
Draw a thin line down the middle of the bridge of your nose — don't take it to the tip. Add a small touch to the V-shaped dip in the center of your upper lip, the cupid's bow; lips look fuller.
Brow bone and inner corner
Apply a little on the bone under your brow, below its highest point. Look outward and add a small touch to the inner corner of your eye.
Check with little product
Turn your face side to side toward the light: highlighter should only glow when light hits it. Too much? Go over it with a clean brush.
Highlighter shade for your undertone
Don't know your undertone? Take the skin undertone test.
Highlighter for your face shape
Oval face
The highest point of the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose.
Round face
A vertical line: the center of the forehead and the tip of the chin.
Square face
The center of the forehead and the tip of the chin; stay away from the corners.
Long face
Horizontally beside the cheekbones; skip the center of the forehead.
Common mistakes
- Highlighting the whole forehead and nose: it looks oily.
- Putting it on visible pores or breakouts: it brings texture forward.
- Chunky glitter: in daylight it reads as sparkle, not glow. Choose a finely milled formula for daytime.
- Highlighting the tip of the nose: it can make the nose look bigger.
FAQ
Where do you put highlighter on your face?
On the high points where light naturally hits: the tops of the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, the cupid's bow, the brow bone, the inner corners of the eyes and — depending on your face shape — the center of the forehead and the tip of the chin.
Highlighter before or after blush?
After. The order is contour, blush, highlighter, so the glow sits on top of the color.
Can you use highlighter on oily skin?
Yes, but only on the tops of the cheekbones and sparingly. Use powder highlighter after powder and keep it off the T-zone.
